Somehow Sadie Benning is always au courant. Her Pixelvision film masterpieces are the quintessential identity work of the 90s. Then she started Le Tigre and we were all like, “Cassavetes!" and "Metro cards!” A few years ago she started making these little blobby paintings bumping into one anther that seemed almost Play-doh-like. There was something dumb and highly satisfying about them. People would stare and want to touch. Now Benning has a new show with the same material, but the blobs have grown in scale, and shifted into little people or cigarette boxes. And there’s a mask staring down an inset photo, making the works more collage-y.
